WTF – Why Would You Ever Let Someone Own This?

by | Sep 14, 2023 | Attorney Marketing, Internet Marketing, Web Design

Have you ever felt like you were trapped?

I don’t mean physically trapped. I mean, have you ever felt trapped such that you couldn’t make a change because the consequences of change would be too great? The kind of change that might result in losing everything you’ve worked so damn hard to build?

If so, you’re not alone. Here’s the story.

I received a phone call from an attorney who we’ll call “Ed.” Ed wanted to talk with me about managing his website and online marketing. He needed more clients, and he understood how effective online marketing could be for his law firm.

So far so good. Or at least I thought.

While I was talking with Ed, asking him a few questions, I found out he was trapped. He didn’t own his domain name.

Here’s what happened to Ed:

When Ed had his website built several years ago, the web design company suggested that he use one of their domain names — one they already owned. They told him that their domain name was more likely to rank high on search engines.

Sounds appealing, right? Ed thought so, too. After all, it was less hassle.

But here’s the problem. If Ed wanted to redesign his website on a different web marketing platform or move it to a different web hosting company, he’d have to buy a new domain name registered in his name.

Not to mention, Ed would lose his current search engine ranking, which is arguably the most valuable aspect of any website.

Why? Because if your website can’t be found, you won’t get any business.

WTF?!!!

Let me explain.

It could take years to restore Ed’s website ranking on search engines. As if that’s not enough, add up the $1,000’s of dollars he’d lose in sales and the money he’d spend paying someone to optimize his website.

So ask yourself: “What’s it REALLY going to cost Ed to restore his website’s search engine ranking from scratch?”

If the thought of all that doesn’t make you want to pull your hair out, there’s more…

Ed would have to reprint brochures, business cards and change anything else associated with this domain name.

Talk about costly!

So in short, please don’t ever let someone else own your domain name.

As you can see, there are real consequences associated with not owning your domain name — specifically, lost leads and sales.

And if you’re going to hire someone to help you with your website/online marketing, you might ask them these 11 questions.

Have you ever made any mistakes with your website? Mistakes that have cost you leads and sales? Wanna talk about how to fix them?
